COVID-19 quickly changed the world as we knew it, and even now, a year and a half later, we are still adjusting to the pandemic reality. The price and popularity trends in travel arguably most accurately depict society’s reaction and response to the changing mandates and infection rates.

At the beginning of the pandemic, travel costs dropped dramatically. Domestic and international flights were available for less than $100. Over the summer of 2021, with the release of the vaccines, opening of borders, and the loosening of restrictions, the demand for flights increased. With the increase in demand came a 24% increase in airfare, as compared to May of 2020.

The entrance of the Delta variant onto the scene introduced a new set of travel trends. Consumers’ travel confidence crashed 40% from early June 2021 to August, with only 20% reporting feelings of optimism. However, travel demand seems to be leveling off, and airfare prices are expected to decrease by only 10% this fall.

Holiday travel is expected to be on the rise. The trend seems to be to remain domestic, either to hometowns or US beaches or mountains. Other popular destinations include Mexico and the Caribbean.

“I am planning on driving home in order to save money on a plane ticket,” says college student Imani Gibson, who is making her travel plans to go home for her Thanksgiving and Winter breaks.

Also rising in popularity are road trips. Studies show that Americans find traveling by car to be safer, more efficient, and cost-effective, especially for families with kids. The pandemic opened society’s awareness and creativity in various methods of travel.

Working from home also opened up the opportunity for more travel, allowing professionals to take their office with them anywhere. Trends are showing travelers seeking out more luxurious locations for longer time periods.

Whatever the pandemic has in store for us next, those who are determined to travel will always find a way. Keep your eyes on the sky and on ticket prices, as trends are often as quick to change as they arrived.
